Our first project in Los Angeles is a two-story townhouse-style duplex located on a ridge in Echo Park with amazing views of the city and, on clear days, to the Pacific Ocean. We found the original 1968 building design to be introverted and closing itself off to the outside. On a shoe-string budget, we opted to open up the building to the outside as much as possible without triggering any structural upgrades. The project was completed in less than 8 weeks and with a budget of $33/sf. The scope of this 5-bedroom double home includes the installation of new skylights, a living room deck overlooking the garden and extensive interior renovations that open up the space to make it more fluid and livable. In late afternoons, the living-room is filled with the warm, orange glow of LA sunsets while the skylight infuses the stairs in a contrasting cool, blue light.
